Gwangju National University of Education was first founded as Chonnam Public Teachers School in March 31, 1923. It was reorganized as Gwangju Teachers College (a two-year college) in April 1, 1961. In March 1, 1981, the Gwangju Teachers College (a two-year college) turned into a four-year university and it was renamed as Gwangju National University of Education in 1993. In March 1996, the Graduate School of Education was added.
